Starting from a Sonoma County monastery that cares for two children who have AIDS, Mary de’Armond and her 90-pound black Labrador retriever, Yom, began walking across country in February. Since taking that first step in the little coastal town of Annapolis, De’Armond and Yom have tramped through the San Francisco Bay Area and into the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, more than 300 miles southeast of their starting point. They’re still a long way from their destination, Plymouth Rock, Mass., but De’Armond reported that they were in good shape as they took a break for a few days in Fresno.
