Three San Diego financial institutions were robbed of more than $4,000 Thursday, police said.
The first robbery occurred shortly before 10 a.m. at the Home Federal Bank on Rosecrans Street in Point Loma. Witnesses told police that a white man in his mid-30s, 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds, handed a teller a note saying he had a gun and demanding money. The teller handed him $1,080, and the thief, who was wearing a ski mask and a blue-and-white plaid shirt, fled on foot.
About 1:30 p.m., a man entered the California First Bank on University Avenue in East San Diego, handed a teller a note demanding money and told her to keep smiling, police said. The man, who was described as white, 6 feet, 1 inch tall, tanned and dressed in jeans, a dark shirt and a white sport jacket, made off with $1,432.
The third robbery happened shortly after 2 p.m. at the Far West Savings & Loan in the 5500 block of La Jolla Boulevard. A white man in his late 20s, carrying a 5-inch blue steel revolver, took $1,700 from two tellers. Witnesses told police the man is about 5 feet, 8 inches tall, 180 pounds and was wearing a pasted-on beard, a bright-green windbreaker and a red, white and blue baseball cap.
Police were looking for suspects.
