Police to Question Nunn Over Fracas That Left 6 Injured

Middleweight boxer Michael Nunn of North Hollywood will be questioned by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives investigating a brawl in a Universal City restaurant two weeks ago that left six employees injured.
“Several victims involved have pointed out Michael Nunn” as one of four men who fought with the employees, said Dave Clark, a detective for the West Hollywood Division. “But I haven’t talked to Nunn yet to get the other side.”
Clark would not speculate on the possibility of criminal charges being filed against the fighter.
Nunn’s attorney, Mike Goossen, said only that “Michael Nunn is clearly innocent of any alleged wrongdoing or accusations.”
Nunn, 25, would not comment.
In the March 31 fight, restaurant security guard Jon Fleming suffered bruised ribs and a bruised jaw, doorman James Varnum suffered a broken nose and four other employees incurred various injuries, the most serious of which was a broken jaw.
Said Glen Fleetwood, a Woodland Hills attorney representing Fleming and Varnum: “My understanding from talking to my clients and reading the police report is that one of the people with Nunn either threw a drinking glass or put his fist through a window in the bar area, depending on who you talk to.”
Nunn’s companion was told to leave, according to Fleetwood, but asked instead if he could pay for the damage.
“When he was told it would be $50, he shoved my client, Jon Fleming, who started walking forward again and was then shoved by Nunn and the other three members of his party,” Fleetwood said.
A fight broke out as Varnum attempted to restrain one of the members of Nunn’s group, then, according to Fleetwood, the entire group attacked Varnum.
“As more restaurant employees got involved, the group was moved outdoors where Nunn struck Fleming twice. Nunn was using both his fists and feet,” Fleetwood continued.
“People in the restaurant had recognized Nunn right away.”
Negotiations are nearly concluded for a world title fight between Nunn (29-0, 19 knockouts) and Frank Tate, the International Boxing Federation middleweight champion. That match is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 1.
