Mozambique Rebels Say They Killed 35 Soldiers

LISBON — Mozambique’s right-wing rebels said on Saturday that they killed 35 soldiers when they ambushed a train and captured an army barracks in two attacks last week.
Rebels attacked a locomotive carrying war materiel in the north last Friday, killing nine Tanzanian and five government soldiers, according to a brief statement distributed in Lisbon by the Mozambique National Resistance. The rebels also hit an army position at Moamba, 30 miles northwest of the capital, Maputo, killing 21 soldiers.
