L'AQUILA, Italy — Police today recovered a 13th-Century Pope’s mummified remains that were stolen from a cathedral here three days ago.
The remains of Celestine V, who resigned in 1294 after a five-month papacy, were found in a plywood box hidden in the hollow of a cemetery wall 40 miles away, authorities reported. Police said they found the site by following suspected thieves, who got away.
