Oliphant on Degrees

Oliphant’s article was dead on target. As a second-year student at USC, I can attest to the existence of professors who merely kill time in lectures, base their material on woefully inadequate textbooks, and foist off the bulk of the work on their assistants.
Worse yet are the students who either don’t recognize or don’t care about the fact that they are not being educated but rather processed through the courses. How refreshing and beneficial for the system it would be for students to be admitted to graduate programs and employed on the basis of what they’ve learned, and not what they memorized the night before the exam.
