King Hussein of Jordan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir as shortsighted and said the United States should save the Jewish state from itself. Appearing on NBC’s “Sunday Today” show, Hussein said the assassination of Khalil Wazir, the Palestine Liberation Organization’s No. 2 man, was “more than likely” carried out by Israel in an attempt to scuttle Middle East peace efforts. “I think it will probably mean tensions in the area will grow. . . ,” he said, but he added that the United States “has a moral right” to push Israel toward a peace settlement. “If there is no solution, the end is an explosion, a disaster. . . . I could see a disaster overtaking all of us . . . sooner or later,” Hussein said.
