City Schools Approve Dana Site Swap for Community College Midway Center
- Share via
The San Diego city schools’ board voted unanimously Tuesday to proceed with a transfer of the abandoned Dana Junior High School site in Point Loma to the San Diego Community College district. In return, the community college district would transfer its smaller Midway Adult Center to the city district, which would then lease it commercially and use any funds for educational improvements.
The school district sees the plan as an ideal solution for the controversial Dana site, which Point Loma residents have demanded remain as an educational facility and not be torn down for commercial development that could alter the single-family-residence neighborhood.
The community college district last month approved the idea of the transfer but asked for staff reports on financing and other issues before proceeding. Those reports, due next month, will detail how the college district will raise the $7 million needed to renovate Dana and whether a sufficient number of students would use the site for educational programs.
