Local News in Brief : Pay Increases Approved for Police

Redondo Beach police captains, lieutenants and sergeants were given 4.5% pay raises this week after 10 months of labor negotiations.

The City Council approved the raises, retroactive to Oct. 10, as part of a two-year contract with the Police Supervisory and Management Assn. that includes twice-a-year raises. The last contract expired Sept. 30.

The two captains got additional 4.5% raises, retroactive to April 9, and the seven lieutenants and 13 sergeants got an additional 3% raise for the same period.

In October, all the supervisors will get 5% raises. Next April, raises will amount to 4.8% for captains, 2.7% for lieutenants and 1.2% for sergeants.

The captains earned $4,983 a month before the new contract and will make $5,987 a month next April. For the same period, the lieutenants’ monthly salaries will go from $4,529 to $5,257 and sergeants’ monthly salaries will be increased from $3,876 to $4,434.

City officials and the association also have agreed to terms for fringe benefits but are working on the wording of the memorandum of understanding, said Assistant City Manager Ray Griest.
