Local News in Brief : Review of Police Tax Issue

Inglewood officials will review a proposed property tax assessment to pay for more police after hearing from homeowners who contend that owners of businesses and multiple-unit dwellings should pay a larger share.
The proposed assessment to raise $1.4 million to pay for 20 more officers would charge single-family properties $60 annually, parcels with two to four units $90 and larger residential parcels and commercial and industrial parcels $120.
Council members said Tuesday that while community meetings on the proposal show that residents want more officers, their main concern is that the tax will place a disproportionate burden on single-family homeowners.
City Manager Paul Eckles said the assessment formula will be reviewed and presented to the council next week.
