Bart Kalbach, the San Diego State center who was severely injured in an pickup truck accident May 6, had a blood alcohol content of .10 at the time, according to the California Highway Patrol.
In California, a person with a level of .10 or higher is considered legally intoxicated.
Officer Don Billdt of the CHP said a blood sample was taken from Kalbach shortly after the accident. He said the results of the test will be forwarded to the Imperial County district attorney’s office for possible prosecution.
Kalbach was reported in serious condition Wednesday in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix with a broken vertebra near the neck. He was transported to St. Joseph’s shortly after the accident, which occurred on Interstate 8 about 4 1/2 miles west of the California-Arizona border.
GOLF
The U.S. International University women’s golf team has been selected to the NCAA Division I championships for the third time in the past four years, and San Diego State narrowly missed being invited.
The Aztecs were ranked for the first time this season and finished 17th in the NCAA computer ratings. Seventeen teams are selected to the NCAA tournament, but there must be one each from the five regions. Since the Midwest did not have a team ranked in the top 17, Ohio State was selected to fill a spot, bumping SDSU from the tournament.
USIU finished the season ranked 13th and is led by junior Allison Shapcott, ranked 24th in the nation.
The tournament will be May 25-28 at New Mexico State in Las Cruces.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
