Giamatti Expected to Issue Ruling on Guerrero Today

PHILADELPHIA — National League President Bart Giamatti is expected to rule today on whether Dodger third baseman Pedro Guerrero will be suspended for throwing his bat at New York Mets pitcher David Cone Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Guerrero threw the bat after being hit by one of Cone’s pitches.
Giamatti has viewed a videotape of the incident and was expected to receive plate umpire John Kibler’s written report Monday night, according to a league spokeswoman.
Guerrero, who arrived here Monday night for the start of a nine-game Eastern trip by the Dodgers, declined to comment when approached by reporters in the lobby of the team’s hotel. Guerrero told Mike Williams, Dodger publicity director, that he did not want to comment because, “It’s over.”
There would seem to be a realistic chance, however, that Guerrero will be suspended. Cone hit Guerrero on the shoulder with a slow curve in the sixth inning of the Dodgers’ 5-2 loss to the Mets.
Guerrero reportedly was angered because Met pitcher Dwight Gooden had hit Dodger shortstop Alfredo Griffin in the right hand with a fastball Saturday night. Griffin suffered a broken bone and is on the 15-day disabled list.
Kibler said after Sunday’s game that, in his opinion, Cone had not thrown at Guerrero intentionally.
