El Monte : Water Pollution Funding

Assemblywoman Sally Tanner (D-El Monte) announced that subcommittees in both the Senate and the Assembly have approved her request to add $900,000 to the state budget to step up the search for sources of ground-water contamination in the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys.
The allocation would enable the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board to hire 16 people to search for pollution sources near contaminated wells, oversee the cleanup of chemical leaks from underground tanks and find out if contaminants have leaked into ground water from landfills and quarries. Trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE) and other chemicals have polluted 135 wells in the San Gabriel and San Fernando valleys.
Tanner said she is seeking a meeting with Gov. George Deukmejian to solicit his support for the budget increase.
