RTD Votes to Boost Bus Fares to $1.10

Faced with a potential $47-million shortfall in the coming fiscal year, the RTD board today raised bus fares from 85 cents to $1.10, beginning July 1, and hiked the cost of a monthly bus pass from $32 to $42.
The increases, expected to draw sharp criticism from public and private sources, were aproved on an 8-2 vote, with board Vice President Carmen Estrada and member Charles Storing voting against them.
RTD staff had estimated that the higher bus fares would generate another $27.5 million a year in revenue for the financially strapped bus agency.
The increases came after 13 months of deliberations.
