McEnroe Aces Way to Victory

PARIS — John McEnroe, firing 13 aces, swept past Christian Bergstrom of Sweden 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 today in the French Open tennis championships, setting up a third-round match against 16-year-old Californian Michael Chang. McEnroe, a former No. 1 player now ranked 16, kept his comeback alive.
The two top seeds, defending champions Steffi Graf of West Germany and Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, easily advanced. Graf overpowered Susan Sloane of the United States 6-0, 6-1, and Lendl beat Niclas Kroon of Sweden 6-4, 6-0, 6-1. Women’s seeds Lori McNeil of the United States, Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria and Sandra Cecchini of Italy were upset losers, while men’s seeds Pat Cash and Henri Leconte escaped with hard-won, five-set victories.
