SAN DIEGO’S GENERAL PRACTITIONERS

Keiba Lewis, Lincoln, City Central League
The first time Lewis stepped on a varsity basketball court, in a Christmas tournament game at Madison during her freshman year, she took a shot at the wrong basket.
“We were near the other team’s basket, gained possession, somebody threw it to me, and I just shot it,” Lewis said, laughing.
People aren’t laughing anymore. She won four letters in basketball, four in track, three in volleyball and one in cross country. She averaged 17 points and 15 rebounds a basketball game during her senior year and earned a scholarship to UC Irvine.
“I’ve met a lot of friends through sports,” Lewis said. “Even now, during track meets, people will come up to me and say, ‘Didn’t you play basketball?’ ”
There’s not always time to approach Lewis, who is 6-feet, 170-pounds, during a track meet. She competes in four events only because the rules will not let her compete in more. During her track career, she has run the 100, 200, 400, 110-low hurdles, 300 low hurdles, 400 relay, 1,600 relay, high jump, discus and shotput.
Is it ever too much?
“No, because when basketball is over and track starts, I still want to play basketball,” she said. “I’m usually at school until 5 or 6 p.m., and when there’s nothing to do, I stay there anyway. Why go home? I stay there with friends, mess around and have fun.”
