Chae-Ho Chong and Mike Bible hit home runs and Dan Penner allowed one hit as the San Fernando Valley Dodgers beat the Santa Maria Indians, 10-0, in the National Baseball Congress opener for both teams at Elks Field in Santa Maria.
Penner, a right-hander, had eight strikeouts in the game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.
Chong was 2 for 3, including a three-run double that keyed the Dodgers’ six-run rally in the second inning. Bible was 2 for 2.
The Dodgers, who finished 11th in the nation last season, and the Indians, who finished fourth, continue their five-game series today with a doubleheader.
