President Reagan has asked Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to ask North Korea not to disrupt the Summer Olympics at Seoul, according to a Japanese Defense Agency official.
U.S. Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci told his Japanese counterpart, Tsutomu Kawara, that Reagan brought up Olympic security at the recently completed Moscow summit, the official said.
“The Soviet side’s response was North Korea is a decent country,” the official said. “The Soviet Union said it is hoping the Seoul Olympics will be carried out successfully.”
