A 12-year-old boy died Friday when the gun he and his 13-year-old brother were playing with accidentally discharged, said Sgt. Bill Krunglevich of the Oceanside Police Department.
Joseph Bixler and his brother were in the living room of their home in the 1400 block of Zeiss Street playing with what police called “the family weapon,” a .38-caliber revolver. The gun discharged, and a single bullet struck Joseph in the chest, Krunglevich said.
A Life Flight helicopter took the victim to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla after the 11 a.m. accident.
He died there about an hour later, said Lynn Morra, a hospital spokeswoman.
