Two men were shot--one of them fatally--at the Southeast Athletic Field early Sunday, police reported.
At 1 a.m., Sherwood Brooks, 21, arrived home at his grandmother’s house suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, police spokesman Dave Cohen said. Brooks said he had been shot at the athletic field, Cohen said. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition Sunday.
At 2:42 a.m., officers who had gone to the field, at 45th Street and Newton Avenue, to search for evidence in Brooks’ shooting discovered the body of a man beside a car. William Jackson, 24, of East San Diego, died of a gunshot wound to the head, Cohen said.
Police said they do not know whether the shootings were related or if either crime stemmed from gang activity.
