Long Beach : Quake Survey of Buildings

Saying that it foresees “a major problem” with buildings that do not meet the city’s earthquake safety ordinance, the Long Beach Planning Commission has asked the City Council to, among other things, hire a consultant to survey all such buildings.
By 1991, more than 600 buildings that do not now comply with the city’s earthquake safety law will have to be modified or demolished. Commission Chairwoman Nancy Latimer said that she and her colleagues fear many owners will “choose the easy solution and demolish their structures, thereby destroying some of our city’s most precious architectural heritage.”
The commission is recommending, among other things, that the city consider a bond program that would provide owners with affordable loans for earthquake hazard abatement.
On Tuesday, the council forwarded the commission’s recommendations to City Manager James C. Hankla for review.
