A new British law making it harder for some Commonwealth citizens to immigrate to Britain takes effect Aug. 1 over objections from critics who say it is discriminatory and will break up families. Under the law, male Commonwealth citizens living in Britain will have to prove they can financially support their families before relatives living abroad are allowed to join them. The government said the law was needed because it was being left with the responsibility of supporting families of immigrants.
