New Soviet society or no, says cellist-conductor Mstislav Rostropovich, he will never return to his homeland. “ Glasnost exists but not for me,” Rostropovich, 61, told the West German daily Die Welt. “I cannot give a concert in the Soviet Union. I am dead there. . . . We must wait and wait and wait until truly open times come,” said Rostropovich, chief conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington since 1977--three years after defecting from the Soviet Union. He was later stripped of his Soviet citizenship.
