BOGOTA, Colombia — Seven miners were killed and 15 are missing after part of a gold mine collapsed in Colombia’s northwestern Antioquia province Monday night, a local mayor said Tuesday.
Rogelio Osorio told radio reporters that rescue workers had found seven bodies and were searching for 15 miners trapped under tons of mud and rock at the mine near Taraza village, 215 miles from the capital.
Heavy rains and primitive working conditions caused the accident, said Osorio, mayor of Taraza.
