An associate professor of English at Glendale Community College has received a national fellowship to study in Poland.
Bart Edelman, who has been a professor at the college for 13 years, is one of 12 university and community college applicants to receive the fellowship from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin.
Edelman will spend six weeks in Krakow researching the influence of Stanislaw Witkiewicz on Polish theater and theater of the absurd.
Edelman said that Witkiewicz was one of the forerunners in avant-garde Eastern European drama. The writer committed suicide in 1939, a week after the Nazis invaded Poland.
