Santa Monica : Extension of Bike Path OKd

The California Coastal Commission has approved the extension of the Santa Monica bicycle path to the city’s northern limits.
The bike path now stretches from the Palos Verdes Peninsula to just past the Santa Monica pier.
The original bicycle route, adopted in 1968 by the County Board of Supervisors, called for a bike path that would run along the coast from Point Dume to Torrance. Opposition from beach front homeowners halted the path’s full development.
The new route, which is the result of recent negotiations between coastal property owners and Santa Monica city officials, places the path far enough from beachfront residences to soothe homeowner concerns.
“We’re all real pleased that we’ll soon have a beach bike path going all the way down the beach,” said Mayor James Conn.
