Winnie Mandela Cancels 6-Hour Visit to Jailed Husband

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Winnie Mandela has called off a special visit to her husband, jailed black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela, on his 70th birthday next Monday, her lawyer said today.
Attorney Ismail Ayob told reporters that Winnie Mandela did not want to accept special privileges from the South African government and wanted to focus attention on other jailed opponents of apartheid and those on Death Row.
She and members of her family were due to see South Africa’s most famous prisoner for six hours Monday in Cape Town’s Pollsmoor Prison.
The extended visit was a concession by Pretoria, which normally allows only 40-minute meetings.
Ayob said Winnie Mandela will make an ordinary visit to her husband on another day next week.
