Bull-Running Toll: 224 Injured at Pamplona Festival

PAMPLONA, Spain — Six fighting bulls bruised and trampled 18 people Thursday in a “safe windup” to Pamplona’s eight-day bull-running fiesta, bringing the tally of injured to 224 in this year’s celebration.
Runners faced Miura bulls, known as Spain’s most dangerous breed, but none of the 18 suffered serious injury or gorings, hospital spokesmen and police said.
“We had no ambulance calls today. It was the smoothest run this year and a safe windup to the fiesta,” said civil protection official Jose Alaiz.
The fiesta, which dates from 1591 and honors St. Fermin, gained world fame in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel “The Sun Also Rises.”
