I’m impelled to comment briefly on Howard Rosenberg’s implication that Americans’ dread of getting older is “fear of dying” (“NBC Documentary Series: Fluff for a Summer’s Eve,” July 12). Not so.
Since my retirement as an entertainment publicist three years ago, I’ve been in contact with aging citizens as a volunteer in nursing homes, the Studio City Public Library and the Motion Picture and Television Home.
Major fears are impoverishment, loneliness, loss of daily functions and debilitating illnesses.
The least fear: fear of death.
