Re: “Sound Improvements for Bowl’s Acoustics,” July 11. It is possible that history has completed a full circle.
The 1964 season was played with a true three-channel stereophonic system that our firm designed. It used three microphones, leaving all artistic effects to the performers and conductor. A fourth channel was sometimes used to balance a soloist. The results were superb.
The apparent compulsion to keep playing with this installation is fascinating.
