The World : Fall of Afghan City Told

Less than a week after Soviet troops pulled out of the strategic northern provincial capital of Kunduz, a Western diplomat reported that Afghan rebel forces have taken the city. Communications between Kunduz, the capital of the province of the same name, and the Afghan capital, Kabul, reportedly were cut off. A Soviet officer reported that Kunduz has been overrun, the Western diplomat said, and unofficial Afghan sources said they have heard similar reports. However, the official Bakhtar news agency reported that the attack on Kunduz had been beaten back by government forces, Reuters news agency reported from Islamabad, Pakistan.
