Johnson’s 43-Yard Field Goal in Overtime Gives Seahawks 16-13 Victory Over Lions

PONTIAC, Mich. — Norm Johnson’s 43-yard field goal 4:07 into overtime lifted the Seattle Seahawks to a 16-13 exhibition victory over the Detroit Lions Thursday night.
The field goal, at the end of a 4-play, 21-yard drive, capped a 16-point comeback for the Seahawks, who trailed, 13-0, at halftime.
Johnson kicked one field goal in the third period, and the Seahawks got 10 points in the fourth quarter, including Johnson’s 28-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining to tie the score, 13-13.
Jeff Kemp, who started and played most of the first half for Seattle after Dave Krieg suffered a sprained knee, relieved Kelly Stouffer with 2:13 remaining and drove the Seahawks 67 yards in 9 plays to set up Johnson’s tying field goal.
Kemp was also the quarterback on the winning drive in the extra period.
Detroit’s Garry James gained 51 yards in 8 carries, including a 16-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, before suffering a mild ankle injury.
