The USTA/Volvo Team Tennis League, a grass-roots program considered tennis’ answer to public park softball leagues, moves up a level this weekend at UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Fifty-one teams, including 17 from the Valley area, will compete in the USTA/Volvo Southern California Sectionals today. Winners from the three-day tournament will advance to national tournaments throughout the country later this month.
Under the tournament format, teams of from four to 15 players play two singles and three doubles matches against each opponent. Nine Valley teams advanced to the sectionals, including six from the Northridge area. Eight Ventura County teams also are competing.
The tournament also includes teams from Orange County, the San Gabriel Valley, the South Bay, San Diego and San Luis Obispo.
Finals begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. There is no admission charge.
