Use of Seat Belts Climbs to 43% in 19-City Survey

WASHINGTON — The Transportation Department announced Friday that use of seat belts hit 43%, the highest level ever, in a recent survey of 19 cities nationwide.
Thirteen of the cities surveyed were in states with mandatory seat belt laws. Usage in those cities was 48.3%, the department said. In the six other cities, usage was 30%.
San Diego had the highest usage of the cities surveyed at 65.6%, and Providence, R. I., had the lowest, 15.4%.
