About 150 people marched through Manhattan’s East Village singing “We Shall Overcome” to protest police conduct in a bloody melee that erupted over a park curfew. Police efforts to enforce the 1 a.m. curfew last Sunday set off a riot in which mounted and foot patrols charged the crowd with night sticks and beat people to the ground. More than 50 people were injured and 91 complaints of police brutality were filed. The demonstrators, organized by community groups and the New York Civil Liberties Union, walked slowly through the streets with their linked hands held high to Tompkins Square Park on Avenue A, the scene of the riot.
