Soviet athlete Sergei Kalmykov suffered serious head injuries at an international track and field event in Lage, West Germany, when he fell trying to clear 13-1 1/2 in the pole vault and struck his head on a wooden pallet next to the foam landing cushion.
Bleeding, he was taken by helicopter to a hospital for computer scans to determine the severity of his head injuries. One doctor said he probably sustained a fractured skull.
