McEnroe to Play in San Francisco Tournament

SAN FRANCISCO — John McEnroe will compete in the $425,000 Transamerica Open Championships this fall.
McEnroe, a former Wimbledon champion ranked 17th among male professionals in the world, has won the Transamerica Open five times.
Also playing in the the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 competition at the Cow Palace will be Kevin Curren, a former Wimbledon finalist.
The total prize package for the 1988 Transamerica is $425,000, an increase of more than $100,000 over the 1987 package of $303,400.
Two-time Wimbledon champion J. Donald Budge will be the Transamerica’s honorary referee to mark the 50th anniversary of his winning the grand slam, MacKay said.
