Warren, N.J.-based Chubb Corp. said several weeks would be needed to determine the amount of Chubb’s liability on a controversial drought coverage plan that has farmers suing, insurance departments angry and Chubb officials struggling for damage control. The insurer hopes to pay all claims by early October after coordinating reports from 1,100 U.S. weather measuring stations. Chubb officials have said that recent rainfall after dry weeks in June and July may have relieved it from having to pay roughly half the $40 million in coverage granted.
