The Super Cup One-Design 14s Invitational--a race designed for spectators--is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday on San Diego Bay, near Seaport Village.
Eight teams from the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Japan have entered. Chris Dickson, the skipper on Kiwi Magic in 1986-87 at the America’s Cup challenger trials, is tentatively scheduled to compete.
A 111-year-old catamaran scale model built by Nathanael G. Herreshoff will be put on display today at 9:30 a.m. at the Downtown Marriott Hotel. John Marshall, design manager of Stars and Stripes, is scheduled to speak at the ceremony. The model will be on display throughout the America’s Cup series.
TENNIS
University of San Diego men’s tennis Coach Ed Collins has been selected as one of 16 recipients of the 1988 Volvo Tennis/Coaches community service awards.
Collins, who is entering his 11th season as the Toreros’ head coach, will be flown to New York for a ceremony honoring all 16 coaches. A native of San Diego, Collins began coaching in 1968 at Monte Vista High School.
GOLF
Celebrity host Dennis James and a group of movie and television stars will participate in the seventh annual Physicians Mutual Swing From The Heart Pro/Am golf tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn and Country Club Sept. 6-7. The tournament is open to the public, and admission is free.
Amputees interested in learning to play golf can receive free instruction at a clinic Sept. 17 at the Rancho San Diego Golf Club.
Golf pro Bill Ozgood will give tips on addressing the ball, grip, stance, swing and follow through. The clinic precedes the Southern California Amputee Golf Assn. tournament Nov. 11-13 at Rancho San Diego Golf Club.
