Santa Monica : Hearing on Beach Development

The city’s Recreation and Parks Commission will hold a public hearing Sept. 15 on the proposed development of a 5-acre piece of beach that is the site of the Sand and Sea Club.

The City Council recently chose restaurateur Michael McCarty to develop a luxury hotel and arts center on the site at 415 Pacific Coast Highway. A formal contract for the project has yet to be awarded.

The hearing, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Room 213 at City Hall, 1685 Main St., will provide information on the McCarty proposal and be a forum for public comments on the project.

City officials have said the semi-private Sand and Sea Club would be closed and torn down to increase public access to the beach. Critics of the plan, however, have questioned whether the expensive hotel that McCarty proposes would achieve that goal.
