Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd., a major Japanese shipbuilding company, said it has successfully tested economical contra-rotating propellers on a merchant vessel for the first time in the world. The company said the propellers, which rotate in opposite directions, have been installed on a Japanese car carrier currently in service. The results showed energy savings of 16% and proved that the system functions without any problem, the company said.
