Prep Football : Roundup : Bonilla Leads Costa Mesa to 22-18 Victory

Running back Manny Bonilla scored two touchdowns and quarterback Rich Schones threw for one as Costa Mesa High School held off Rancho Alamitos, 22-18, in a nonleague game Thursday in front of 350 at Newport Harbor High School.
Bonilla, a senior who ran for 130 yards in 18 carries, gave Costa Mesa a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on runs of 32 and 23 yards.
The victory ended a 10-game losing streak for Costa Mesa (1-1). Rancho Alamitos is 0-2.
Rancho Alamitos came back in the second quarter to take a 15-14 lead, on David Singletary’s 1-yard scoring run and a 15-yard touchdown pass from Rod McCall to Steve Thorton.
With just 26 seconds left in the first half, Schones fired a eight-yard pass to Joe Schneeweis to give Costa Mesa the lead again. Schones also scored the two-point conversion with a nifty run to give the Mustangs a 22-15 lead.
Schones completed 4 of 13 passes for 37 yards and a touchdown. McCall completed 12-29 for 232 yards and a touchdown. Singletary rushed for 55 yards in 17 carries for Rancho Alamitos.
