Dana Kirk, former basketball coach at Memphis State, boosted his salary through speaking engagements and sports clinics and by shaking hands with furniture store customers, federal court witnesses said.
Kirk, 53, is on trial on charges of tax evasion, filing false tax statements and obstruction of justice.
The government contends that he increased his $62,500 coaching salary with numerous business deals that swelled his income to more than $280,000 in 1983. He is accused of understating his income for 1982 and 1983 by a total of $161,000.
He was expecting salary bonuses of $25,000 shortly before he was fired from Memphis State, a witness said.
