Manville Corp. crossed one of the final hurdles toward emerging from bankruptcy as a federal judge approved $82.75 million in insurance settlements that will be used to pay asbestos victims’ and property damage claims. Manville filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1982 because of a flood of lawsuits filed over asbestos injuries. Although U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Burton Lifland approved the building products company’s reorganization plan in December, 1986, Manville has remained in bankruptcy because of appeals filed against the plan.
