Running back Mark Brown scored on runs of 30 and 7 yards to lead La Habra High School to a 14-10 victory over Newport Harbor in a nonleague game at La Habra.
The victory was the Highlanders’ first under first-year Coach Jack Nichols.
Brown’s second scoring run from 7 yards out with 3:01 left in the third quarter capped a 61-yard drive by La Habra (1-3) and erased Newport Harbor’s 10-8 lead. Brown, younger brother of Servite star tailback Derek Brown, finished with 99 yards in 14 carries.
Newport Harbor (1-3) drove deep into La Habra territory twice after Brown’s go-ahead touchdown but La Habra’s defense stopped the Sailors’ 2 comeback attempts with interceptions by defensive David Gutierrez.
Newport Harbor scored on its first possession of the game on a 1-yard run by running back Tom Walker. Running back Jeff Williams ran for the 2-point conversion to give the Sailors an early 8-0 lead.
La Habra (1-3) tied the score just before halftime on Brown’s 30-yard run. Brown also ran for the 2-point conversion.
Brown’s touchdown was set up 1 play earlier when Jason Kleeger intercepted a Newport Harbor quarterback Tim Newberry at the 50-yard line and returned it 20 yards.
Brown’s first touchdown also broke a streak of 12 scoreless quarters by the Highlanders.
