Nearly 1,000 Iraqi Kurds who sought refuge in Turkey in August after attacks by Iraqi government troops returned home in response to an amnesty offer from Baghdad, Turkey’s Anatolia news agency said. The agency said that 967 Kurds who volunteered to return home were put into 16 buses and driven from refugee camps to the Habul border checkpoint, about 700 miles southeast of Ankara. Turkish journalists who accompanied the refugees to the border saw them crossing into Iraq two hours before an amnesty deadline expired, the agency said. More than 50,000 Iraqi Kurds crossed into Turkey in August amid reports that Iraqi government troops used chemical weapons near their homes.
