Vice Presidential Candidates Bentsen and Quayle Debate
- Share via
Holy Manchurian Candidate, Masked Wonder! Dan Quayle is without doubt the most programmed, the most lightweight candidate who has even been proposed for national office. His debate remarks covered maybe five topics at most, and had obviously been drilled into him by advisers who were afraid a national audience would see the “real” Quayle.
They could have relaxed--there is no real Quayle. His debate skills resembled those of a schoolchild or a beauty pageant contestant. He began every answer by first repeating the question, hesitated while he searched for the correct programmed response, then spoke listlessly.
He is offered up to us as one of the four people most qualified to hold our highest office?
