Tim Hatcher tied a Southern Section record by kicking 5 field goals Friday night as El Modena High School beat Canyon, 29-0, in the Century League opener for both teams in front of 1,500 at El Modena.
Hatcher connected on kicks of 35, 21, 45, 30 and 27 yards in 6 attempts. Hatcher joins Downey’s John Lee (1980) and Don Lugo’s Luis Zendejas (1980) and Al Zendejas (1984) in the record book. He missed holding the single-game field goal mark alone when he missed a 52-yard attempt.
Senior running back Marcus Esposito led the Vanguard ground attack with 126 yards in 26 carries.
Hatcher’s first field goal came with 2 minutes 58 seconds left in the first quarter to give El Modena (2-4, 1-0) a 3-0 lead. Hatcher, a senior, added 3 more field goals in the second quarter from 21, 45 and 30 yards to lift the Vanguards to a 12-0 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, tight end Chris Fisher caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Garcia. Hatcher’s conversion gave El Modena a 19-0 advantage.
Hatcher’s 27-yard field goal gave El Modena a 22-0 margin at the end of the third quarter.
