“Cocktail”--the Usual

CHECK LIST **** Great Balls of Fire *** Good Vibrations ** Maybe Baby * Running on Empty
** 1/2VARIOUS ARTISTS. “Cocktail” sound track. From a ho-hum film comes a score that’s slapdash, but not half-bad. John Mellencamp gives Buddy Holly’s “Rave On” a swampy Cajun treatment, while the Georgia Satellites ram through “Hippy, Hippy Shake.” L.A. musician Preston Smith makes his recording debut with an infectious piece of calypso-pop, “Oh, I Love You So.” There are also Bobby McFerrin’s whimsical hit “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” Ry Cooder with Larry Blackmon on “All Shook Up” and a Fabulous Thunderbirds workout. It is mediocre tracks by Starship and the Beach Boys that make this collection an argument for the programmability of CD players.
