Edgar M. Bronfman, the president of the World Jewish Congress, said the East Germans have agreed to accept moral responsibility and pay reparations to Jewish “sufferers and survivors” of the Nazi Holocaust, but he did not give specifics. There was no statement on the issue from the official East German news agency ADN, which had provided extensive coverage of the visit. Bronfman also said he hoped for better relations between East Germany and Israel, which have never recognized each other diplomatically. Bronfman’s statement came after a three-day tour that included meetings with President Erich Honecker.
